Here are some of my Witch's Stones in my collection. some of you may know of them as Hag Stones. They are also known as Fairy Stones, Holy Stones, Eye Stones and many other names.
What is a Witch's Stone? It is a stone that has had a hole or many holes formed over centuries of wave action. To be a true Witch's Stone it must have a hole running right through it.
In times gone by people hung them above their front door to ward off evil spirits; hung them above their beds to aid a restful nights sleep; nailed them to their stable doors to protect their horses; smaller witch's stones were worn as talismans for protection or to aid fishermen to secure large catches of fish. They were also used in the treatment of rheumatism and cramp, and other ailments such as stomach problems.
It is said that if you look through the hole of the stone you will see 'invisible' creatures (as in the Spiderwick Chronicles movie). It is believed that the stones only share their magic with the finder of the stone.
I have found my own stones mainly on the east coast and south coast of England.... but many are found on the west coast too..... and in Wales and Scotland.
Where did you find your Witch's Stones?
this one looks like 'The Scream' and has all three holes going right through to the other side, and is 4" long
~~~~~~~~~~~
this is my favourite (if one can have a favourite lol)... it measures nearly 4" at it's widest point and has just one (large) hole
~~~~~~~~~~~
here is a smaller version of the one above and measures over 2" at it's widest point... it also just has one hole
~~~~~~~~~~~
here we have one with lovely patterns... measures 3" with just one hole right through
~~~~~~~~~~~
this one is very 'craggy' and has two very small holes going right through (surprising as most of it's many holes go almost all the way through)
~~~~~~~~~~~
this also has only one hole going right through... it measures just over 3"
~~~~~~~~~~~
another stone with one hole right through... measures 3"
~~~~~~~~~~~
this is my smallest stone. it has one hole, and measures just 1 1/2"
~~~~~~~~~~~
this one has two holes right through and measures just over 3"
~~~~~~~~~~~
over 3" long, this stone has three holes with a small stone wedged in one of the holes
~~~~~~~~~~~
I hope that you find my collection interesting
